Most parents know that it’s not easy getting their young children to practice dental hygiene. Trying to get your child to brush and floss can often result in tantrums and tears. It’s so important to instill in them the importance of brushing and flossing at a very young age. Turning dental hygiene into a habit is not only a necessary part of limiting conflicts during brushing time, but it also means that they’re more prepared to have better habits as they get older and more independent.

1. Do it with them

Not only is this a useful way to show them proper technique, it also shows them that they’re not being “singled out” and everyone has to brush their teeth to stay healthy.

2. Compliment them

Positive reinforcement is a great way to get kids into the brushing habit. In general, children want their parents to be proud of them. The reinforcement can be as simple as a high five or a fist bump.

3. Give them choices

Involve them in the process of picking out a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. If the toothpaste tastes good to them or they have a light up toothbrush with their favorite character or one that plays a sing, they may be more willing to practice good dental hygiene.

4. Show them it can be fun

Get excited about brushing your teeth with them or just helping them do it. You can even come up with a tooth brushing song and dance!
