Technique

Using the proper technique while brushing is key to keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy. A majority of dental professionals recommend holding your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and brushing in small circles – ensuring you’re hitting the gum line and removing stubborn plaque. You should also make sure you’re reaching all of your teeth and gums – especially those in the back that tend to be havens for plaque when not sufficiently cleaned.

Toothbrush

Most people should use a soft bristled toothbrush in order to avoid damage to enamel or gums. This is especially important for those who tend to brush their teeth aggressively. You should always consult your Portage dentist to determine what brush is right for you.

You should also be sure to replace your toothbrush regularly – more often than every six months which is what people tend to do because they get a new one from their dentist. In general, you should replace your toothbrush every three months or when you can see that your bristles are worn, making them much less effective at cleaning.

Toothpaste

You should always make sure that you’re using toothpaste that is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). You will find the label easily readable right on the tube. Most dental professionals recommend toothpaste that contains fluoride. If you have sensitive teeth, there are many options available to help limit tooth pain. If you choose whitening toothpaste, you should check with your dentist to make sure that it’s safe.

Time

You should brush your teeth twice daily – the ideal times are typically before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning. You should also brush your teeth for at least two minutes. An easy way to do this is to break your mouth up into quadrants and spend 30 seconds brushing each area.
