A Guide for Brushing Your Teeth Effectively From Your Kalamazoo Dentist

Kalamazoo Dentist

1. Use proper brushing technique

This is the key to keeping your mouth healthy. Most dental professionals recommend brushing in small circles with your brush held at a 45 degree angle. This ensures your gum line is getting the care it needs by removing plaque. It’s also important to make sure that you’re brushing all of your teeth and gum surface – this includes your molars in the back that are havens for plaque when not properly cleaned.

2. Use the correct toothbrush

Dentists recommend a soft bristled toothbrush for most people. If you use a stiffer brush you can risk causing damage to your enamel or gums. This is especially true for people who brush more aggressively. If you’re unsure of what toothbrush is right for you, consult your dentist.

3. Replace your toothbrush regularly

People have a tendency to only replace their toothbrush when they get a new one from their dentist. This is not often enough. As a general rule, you should replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Bristles that are worn are not nearly as effective at removing plaque.

4. Use the right toothpaste

The first thing you need to make sure of is that your toothpaste is approved by the ADA. If it is approved, it will be printed right on the tube. Most dentists recommend toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride helps to strengthen and protect your teeth. If you have sensitive teeth, there are many options available to help limit tooth pain. If you choose whitening toothpaste, you should check with your dentist to make sure that it’s safe.

5. Brush two times a day

Not only should you brush twice a day, typically when you wake up and before you go to bed, you should do so for at least two minutes. An easy way to make sure you’re brushing long enough is to consider your mouth as four quadrants and do each area for 30 seconds each. As an example: top outside, top inside, bottom outside, bottom inside.
